Amazon’s New Warehouse in Indiana Is Unlike Any Other
Amazon has opened a new kind of warehouse in Elkhart, Indiana — one that challenges nearly every convention in logistics facility design.
Amazon has opened a new kind of warehouse in Elkhart, Indiana — one that challenges nearly every convention in logistics facility design.
While most warehouses are built for efficiency and scale, this site doubles as a real-world testbed for more than 40 experimental strategies covering construction materials, energy systems, water management, lighting, and electric-vehicle infrastructure. Every aspect of the building is being measured to evaluate performance, cost, and scalability across Amazon’s global network.
Designed by ZGF Architects, the facility incorporates advanced materials and natural light throughout its structure, creating a workspace that feels strikingly different from the standard steel-and-concrete model. It also aims to achieve zero-carbon certification, positioning it as a template for future facilities that blend operational efficiency with measurable environmental performance.
For Amazon, this isn’t just a new delivery station — it’s a research platform. Data collected here will inform how the company builds, powers, and automates its next generation of logistics infrastructure.
